Reflections from Hospice Staff
While in nursing school, I did a shift with hospice, and from that one 8 hour day I knew that was where I was meant to be, and have been there ever since. It can be a real conversation stopper when someone finds out that you work for hospice. Everyone needs to know that hospice care is not “the end.”
It is often said that many people die how they live; however, everyone deserves compassionate, gentle care. It is making the days count, not counting the days. I have learned to not take any time with our loved ones for granted, for tomorrow is never promised.
I have learned many lessons from the families that I have worked with. Something as small as a smile or a thank you can make a world of difference in their lives. We each face struggles and triumphs every day. We all carry burdens and worry.
My hope is that hospice care helps all of our families lessen those and focus on the remaining time with their family and friends.
